I work as manager of the back end development, and that means I’m part of the digital services team developing the customer facing systems – that’s software development. I’ve been here a little more than six years now.
Mostly we work on Asset IQ, which is 3stepIT’s main system – a web-based system which customers use to manage their devices and assets.

How my role developed
I started as a web developer, then after a few years I began doing a little less actual development and more planning and designing. After that I started to lead a team of five people, but I also work a lot with stakeholders from different teams and from the business units.
A big part of my work is to understand what the customer wants, and then figure out technical solutions and how to implement them. Then there’s the actual technical design. I work as an engineering lead for Asset IQ, so that involves figuring out the technical solutions for any given problem.

What I like most about the job
Well, at bottom I am an engineer, so figuring out the technical puzzles is fun. That motivates me, but apart from that it’s very fulfilling doing this for the customer, being able to deliver something that actually gives them value, and then get the feedback if they're happy about it.
When we achieve something as a team, maybe a big release or something that took a long time to achieve, that’s probably when we are the happiest.

What being a 3stepper means
It means quite a lot actually. I really like working here, because of the culture. We’re still a somewhat small company, so it helps that we know each other. We work hard, but we also hang around with each other, and have fun after work. People really help each other out and have fun working together.

How we dealt with the pandemic
Technically speaking, it wasn’t that big a change. We’ve always been pretty flexible in working from home and stuff, so we were already accustomed to having the video meetings. Since we couldn’t see each other, which is important to us, the company started to think about how we can improve our remote working culture. We had virtual coffees and played some games on the coffee breaks. It’s not the same, but it’s something.

What excites me about the future
Our goals are high, and we’re aiming big. If we look at IT especially and the company in general, we’re a pretty small team to aim to such heights, so that means that we have a lot of freedom in making that a reality. Being part of that is really exciting.
