REstepIT

Frequently asked questions

Here are the most commonly asked questions about our IT asset disposal service, REstepIT.

Do you only accept returned IT equipment from existing 3stepIT customers?

REstepIT is our secure IT asset disposal (ITAD) service which supports any business that wants to dispose of IT sustainably and extend the life of old and unwanted devices. We buy redundant business IT and securely refurbish the devices using best-in-class data sanitization methods. These devices are then resold, displacing the need to produce more devices. It’s a solution that delivers security and sustainability benefits for customers.

What devices do you buy?

We work closely with our customers to help them responsibly manage end-of-life devices, including desktop PCs, laptops, tablets, smartphones, servers, network equipment, printers, AV equipment and monitors.

How do you determine the price for my devices?

We determine the device value based on the technical specification, condition and the current market demand. We determine the price following a careful assessment of each device. The equipment is graded using an 'error points' system, where points are given based on the type and number of defects found on the device. The total number of error points determines the unit’s grade, which in turn defines its value.

How are my devices transported and what is the collections process?

We can take care of the entire collections process from start to finish to guarantee a reliable chain of custody. Our trusted logistics partner can pack and collect the devices from your premises. Once the devices arrive at our refurbishing centre, they are checked in to inventory enabling you to track each device for audit purposes.

What happens to my used IT when it reaches your refurbishment centre?

We recognise that data and device security is perhaps our customers more pressing concern when using our ITAD service. So for your peace of mind, we tag every device with a unique ID and track it as it passed through the refurbishment process. Our highly skilled technicians clean and restore each device before it is packaged for resale. At 3stepIT, we’re always trying to eliminate waste in every form, so if a device is damaged beyond repair, we’ll harvest its component parts to repair other devices.

Why should I outsource data erasure?

Most IT departments have limited resources and carefully disposing used IT equipment can fall to the bottom of the to do list. When old devices are stored away for any period of time, often unmonitored, they present a data security risk. This can be further compounded when in-house IT teams do not have the experience or access to certified data sanitization software. This can lead to errors in the process and a risk of data leakage.

How do I know that no private information or sensitive data is left on the equipment that is resold?

We take data protection very seriously. We use best in class data sanitization software to wipe each device clean during the refurbishing process. Where device sanitization is not possible, we use a robust manual process, physically shredding hard drives or whole devices. As part of the refurbishment process, we create a data sanitization report for all devices which is accessible in our asset disposal portal to give customers a complete data destruction audit trail.

How much of my returned IT equipment gets a second life?

Our business model is built on our customers getting the best value for their used IT assets and on our ability to sell these on the secondary market. Therefore, every device that can be refurbished is given a second life. If a device is beyond repair, we harvest it for parts to repair other devices. We always prefer reuse over recycling, so only badly damaged devices are recycled.

Why should I use your IT asset disposal service instead of sending my devices to be recycled?

Every time a device is reused, we displace the manufacture of a new one, saving precious natural resources that are used in the production of IT equipment. As most of the carbon footprint of a device over its lifetime is produced when manufactured, sending devices to be refurbished and reused will have a positive environmental impact. This makes technology more sustainable.

Where do you resell refurbished IT equipment?

We only sell our refurbished devices to customers that comply with local waste regulations. In 2022, we resold 98% of refurbished devices in Europe. This gives our IT asset disposal (ITAD) customers peace of mind that their end-of-life devices are being handled responsibly.

Is there a risk that your IT equipment will end up in the wrong hands?

Our customers and partners play an important role in ensuring the responsible end-of-life treatment during asset disposition. This includes both trading partners who buy refurbished devices and recycling partners that recycle devices that are beyond repair. We choose our trading partners carefully, prioritising long-term relationships so we know where our refurbished equipment ships. We conduct detailed background checks to make sure they meet our high standards on environmental and waste management, anti-money laundering, bribery and modern slavery. We repeat this check annually because sustainability is always top of our minds. When selecting our recycling partners, we only choose those with high environmental standards. The recycling partners we use in Finland, Norway and Sweden are all ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certified, guaranteeing our customers safe and secure asset disposition.

What happens to non-functional products that are returned to 3stepIT?

As part of our security management procedures, every device handled by 3stepIT first undergoes a secure data erasure process, using best-in-class data sanitization software. Equipment is then assessed and graded based on its quality. The equipment that can no longer be used is recycled by our trusted recycling partners. We only send our equipment to recycling plants that are operated in accordance with the EU’s Waste Electrical and Electronic (WEE) Directive. However, we really prefer to reuse device parts wherever possible, using recycling as a last resort. Through our in-house Repair Programme, in 2021, we repaired nearly 26,000 devices using spare parts from other damaged equipment.

What can I track in the REstepIT portal?

You can access financial and technical details for each device, data sanitization and environmental reports which show the positive carbon and e-waste impact of using our IT asset disposal (ITAD) service. It gives IT managers ultimate peace of mind, by allowing them to follow the whole refurbishing process online.
